1/5/2009

The Caps finished off the Richmond Christmas Challenge with identical 4-1 losses in both the Championship Bracket Semi-final to eventual Tournament Champion Pembina Valley and in the Bronze Medal game to the WMHA League Leading St. Vital Vics. In both contests the Caps were able to outshoot but not out score their opponents.
In the semi-final the Caps fired 33 shots at the PV Hawks net only to have Leiette Klassen (Manitoba Under 18 Provincial Team) be almost perfect except for a second period goal by Caps leading scorer Natasha Kostenko who notched her 17th of the year on a perfect shot to the top corner, assists went to Katie Nichol and Taylor McVannel.
The score remained 2-1 until under 6 minutes remained in the 3rd period when Pembina Valley scored a goal that actually went in off a Caps stick.
The Caps played a solid game producing numerous quality scoring chances but even with a 33-25 shot advantage could not get the win.
Taylor Mutcher took the loss in net for the Caps stopping 21-25 shots.

In the Bronze Medal Game the Caps came out flying outshooting the St. Vital Vics 12 - 6 in the 1st period and taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission on a goal from Shaye Nelissen as she went top corner with a one timer from the point off a pass from Kostenko. The lead held up until the last 5 minutes of the 2nd period when St. Vital scored 2 goals to take the lead. The Caps again outshot the Vics for the period by a margin of 12 - 8. In the 3rd period the Caps continued to press and created numerous opportunities but were once again held back by a solid goaltending performance from Vics Deanna Marion who stopped all 11 Caps shots.
For the game the Caps out shot the Vics 35 - 26. Mykala Rodgers stopped 22 of 26 shots directed her way in the Caps net.
The Caps got stronger as the weekend went on with a shortened bench of 13 skaters. Missing 4 starters, utilizing 3 APs and 4 defense for 3 of 5 games the coaching staff was pleased with the effort of all the players especially on Championship Tuesday where they could have one either or both of their games against 2 of the top teams in the Province.
