Playing one of the best teams in the province the Caps came out on the wrong end of a 4-2 score vs. Pembina Valley in Holland on Wednesday January 21.
The Caps trailed 2-0 early as Jenna Dow scored two 1st period goals before the Caps responded with 29 seconds remaining in the period to make the 1st intermission score 2-1. Jillene Rodgers scored on a nice shot from the slot after taking a pass from Courtney Nichol who extended her point streak to 9 games.
The 2nd period saw the Caps outplay Pembina Valley and tie the score 6 minutes in as Shaye Nelissen let a hard slapshot go from the point where Taylor McVannel had setup for the screen. Leiette Klassen made the first save but McVannel picked up the rebound and scored into the open net. The Hawks restored their one goal lead as Samantha Hink scored after the puck took an unlucky bounce off the boards in neutral ice providing the Hawks with a 2 on 1.
The 3rd period saw the Caps continue to press and get chances while Abby Cathcart shut the door for the Caps making several solid saves and one spectacular leg stop off of a rebound. However Under 18 Team Manitoba goalie Leiette Klassen would not allow another Caps goal as the Caps pulled Cathcart with just over a minute to go. Christine Grenier sealed the victory for Pembina Valley with an empty net goal.
The game was a very well played fast paced contest that saw Cathcart stop 25 of 28 shots and Klassen turn aside 22-24 Caps Shots.
