Win 3-1 in Wisconsin
10/31/2010

The Caps traveled to Superior Wisconsin over the weekend where they pulled off a surprising and unexpected upset over the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. The Caps battled hard throughout the game but were badly outplayed by the stronger and faster UWS team being outshot 65-12. However backed by the TREMENDOUS goaltending of Jacey Schettler and an efficient powerplay eked out a 3-1 victory. Only a late third period goal stopped Schetter from gaining a shutout as she stopped 64 of 65 shots fired her way with a high percentage being quality scoring chances and second and third saves.

The Caps found the back of the net half through the first period when they went on the Powerplay. After controlling the faceoff the Caps got a shot from Rookie D Megan Tully that floated into the top corner through a perfect screne setup by the Cap Forwards. Rookie D Breanna Murner scored almost an identical goal midway through the second period as the Caps again won the draw on a Powerplay and moved the puck until Murner released a shot from the point that hit the far post and went in through a screened UWS netminder.

With the Caps leading 2-0 after the second the Yellowjackets came with relentless pressure in the third period leading to Schettler having to make huge saves to keep the score @ 2-0. With UWS pressing harder and harder the Caps finally got an odd man rush where Taylor McVannel scored on a rebound to make it 3-0. UWS kept pressing and  finally broke Schettler's shutout bid with approx. 7 minutes to play. From this point the Caps continued to hold on and defend wave of offensive flurries from the young UWS squad until the final horn went. The Caps realized they were outplayed but that hard work and continually battling earned them a suprise Win. The entire team was proud of their accomplishment. Assists  were picked up by Maggie Girard, Courtney Nichol, Kali Irwin and Jillian Hoggins.

The Caps were treated to a tour of UWS and St. Scholastica College who both have NCAA Womens Hockey Programs plus watched a D1 game between Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth.

A BIG Thank You to the Coaching Staff @ Wisconsin-Superior for assisting the Caps Program in providing their young players with the opportunity to see what NCAA Hockey and university atmosphere is all about. The players were thrilled by the opportunity.
