CRUNCH SHOWCASE Review
Friday - 8:00pm Thunder Bay vs Central Plains - The Caps played the defending Canadian National Midget Champions first thing and although the score was 5-1 the Caps played hard and were in the game and skated well with the top team in Canada in 2010. Unfortunately for the Caps their #1 goalie Jacey Schettler had to play hurt and it affected her ability to play at her top level. The Caps played the Queens shot for shot with the final total being 28-27 for Thunderbay. Taylor McVannel had the lone marker for the Caps with assists going to Jillene Rodgers and Lidsay Blight.
Saturday - 10 am Central Plains vs Shattuck's St. Mary's - The Caps played the top prep program in North America in their next game and suffered another 5-1 loss to a very tough Shattuck's team. The Caps actually took a 1-0 lead and were tied 1-1 after the first and although they were forced to kill off 12 penalty kills of which 2 were 5 on 3 the Caps were only trailing 3-1 with just over 4 minutes left in the game. The Caps played without ace goalie Jacey Schettler and were forced to recruit a goalie from Minnesota who played for the team the remainder of the tournament. Alyson Vercaigne scored the lone goal for the Caps who fired 21 shots at the Shattuck's net. Bre Hanson faced 46 in net for the Caps with a majority coming on the Shattuck's powerplays. The Caps showed they could compete with a team that gets their players from all over the continent.
Saturday 8pm Rangers vs Central Plains- The Caps next played the APHA Rangers from Winnipeg and in a game they dominated outshooting the Rangers 40 to 19 were forced into overtime after the teams played to a regulation 1-1 tie. The Caps were then forced into a 4 on 3 penalty kill in OT which the Rangers scored on. The Caps got their goal off the stick of Callan Harland with Maggie Girard and Lindsay Blight assisting. In the end the Caps were very unfortunate to lose as they dominated the top team in Winnipeg from start to finsih but had no luck around the net missing on numerous scoring chances and hitting 3 posts plus the Winnipeg netminder was very good.
Sunday 8 am Caps vs. Westman - The Caps jumped on their league rivals when Jillene Rodgers converted a perfect pass from Maggie Girard to give the Caps another 1-0 lead. The Wildcats tied it in the second and there was no scoring from that point on. The Caps again deserved a better fate as they played a solid hockey game outshooting Westman 25-24 but again struggled to convert their chances leading to their second straight OT game and loss.
Although the Caps failed to win a game in the Showcase the team played well against tremendous competition and the Coaches were pleased with the team's efforts and know that they need to work on some minor items to turn these tough losses into victories. They were pleased with the team's defensive play for majority of the games especially some of their penalty killing but need to work on getting the team to convert the work they are doing off the cycle into more chances plus good chances they are creating into more goals.
