Caps Finish WMHA Showcase with 3-1-1 record after 2 Wins on Final Day
The Caps played the Saints and Vics on day 3 of the WMHA Showcase in Selkirk and defeated both teams by scores of 5-4 and 3-1.
Game 4 - Callan Harland had a hat-trick to lead the Caps to their first victory of the day. The Caps scored 4 third period goals to edge the Saints 5-4. Jillian Hoggins and Jillene Rodgers rounded out the Caps scoring as they outshot the Saints 32-16 for the game and 16-6 in a wild third period that saw the 2 teams combine for 7 goals. Picking up assists for the Caps were Maggie Girard and Lindsay Blight with 2 each while single helpers went to Kelsey Desilets, Kali Irwin, Megan Tully and Stephanie Fehr.
Shay Perry picked up the win in net for the Caps.
Game 5 - The Caps final game of the Showcase came against the St. Vital Vics. After a scoreless first period that was a defensive battle with each team only managing 5 shots on net the Caps came to life in the second outshooting the Vics 18-6 and taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission on goals by Alyson Vercaigne and Courtney Nichol. Vercaigne's goal was unassisted while Stephanie Fehr and Vercaigne picked up assists on Nichol's marker. The Caps added an insurance goal 9 minutes into the third as Jillene Rodgers pounced on a rebound in the slot, Taylor McVannel picked up the lone assist.
AP Elisha Oswald picked up her second win of the week stopping 22 of 23 shots, the Caps fired 35 at the Vics net.
NOTES - The WHMA did a great job organizing and running the 2nd Female Midget Showcase and the entire Central Plains organization thanks them for their efforts in putting this event together.
The entire week of play was very competitive with only 2 games over the 3 days having a spread of 5 goals.
CAPS Tie Top Team in WMHA on Second Day of Showcase
Game 3 - The Caps played the Winnipeg Titans on the second day of the WMHA Showcase and earned a 1-1 tie with the top team in the WMHA Female Midget League. The Caps once again outshot and out chanced their opponents but had to come from behind to earn the tie. Maggie Girard collected her 3rd goal in as many games for the Caps with Callan Harland picking up the lone assist. The Caps had very good pressure 5-5 all night leading to numerous scoring chances. Another highlight was their penalty kill which was perfect in not allowing a goal while short handed 6 times.
Elisha Oswald was in net for the Caps and although not busy made several key safes again as the Caps outhot the Titans 29-17. For the third straight game the Caps played strong defensively again giving up less than 20 shots on goal.
CAPS Win 1 - Lose 1 in first day of WMHA SHOWCASE
Game 1 - Although the Caps outplayed both their opponents on the first day of the WMHA Showcase in Selkirk they came away with one win. In the first game of the day the Caps topped APHA Rangers 1-0 after outshooting them 31-17. AP Elisha Oswald picked up the win and although not very busy made some very good safes to preserve the win. Maggie Girard scored the game wining goal in the 2nd period with Stephanie Fehr picking up the only assist.
Game 2 - The Caps played the PTHA Twins next and even though they outshot and outplayed them by a bigger margin than the Rangers they lost 3-1 with the 3rd goal being an empty netter in the last minute. The shots on goal were 34 -16 for the Caps with Maggie Girard picking up her second goal of the day to provide the Caps with a 1-0 lead. After this the Twins goalie shut the door especially in the 3rd period when the Caps fired 17 shots at the Twins net. Shay Perry was in net for the Caps and although she was not busy made several key safes when the Caps were still leading.
