CAPS FINISH 2-1 IN MELVILLE

The Caps traveled to Melville Sask. over the weekend to play 3 exhibitioin games and came away with a solid start to the season earning 2 wins and losing 1.

The Caps started the weekend off with a bang by dropping MFMHL members Yellowhead Chiefs 7-0 Satuday at 2:30. Chantal Gamache and Megan Tully led the Caps as they both scored 3 times while Courtlyn (1 goal - 2 assists) and Sheridan Oswald (3 assists) had 3 points each. Elisha Oswald stopped all 20 shots fired her way to pick up the shut out, for the game the Caps out shot the Chiefs 37-20.

The Caps played the host Melville Prairie Fire at 8:30 Saturday evening and came out on the short end of a 3-2 score although they outplayed the hosts firing 39 shots at the Melville net. Courtlyn Oswald scored both goals for the Capitals and Robin Thiessen took the loss in making her Caps debut. Thiessen was solid in net for the Caps stopping 19 of 22 shots with 2 of the goals scored on Caps' defensive miscues that Thiessen had no chance on.

The Caps picked up their second win of the weekend playing shorthanded as Courtlyn Oswald and Taylor Boehlig both were unavailable. Skating with only 13 skaters against a good Weyburn Golden Wings team the Caps started slow falling behind 1-0 after the first period. The Caps came out strong after the intermission and scored early in the 2nd period when Brook-lyn Riley scored her first of the year after Sheridan Oswald out hustled as Wings player for the puck allowing Riley to score a nice break away goal. The Caps continued to carry the play through the 2nd period however went into the intermission tied 1-1. The 3rd period continued as the 2nd ended with the Caps carrying most of the territorial play but not finding a way to score. Newcomer Madison Dreger changed that with 1:33 remaining in the game as she notched her first goal as a Cap converting a great back door pass.

The Caps outshot the Wings 21-19 in a tight checking game although they controlled the play in the 2nd and especially the 3rd period. Elisha Oswald and Robin Thiessen were solid in net as the Wings beat Oswald early in the first period and then they shut the door and although not extremely busy made several key saves.

The Coaching staff felt it was a good solid start to the season feeling positives were the teams' speed and work ethic and will move forward with the notes they made on what needs to be worked on at the individual and team level.
