GREAT TOUR THROUGH WISCONSIN FOR CAPITALS
The Caps left Thursday Oct. 18 for a tour that saw them play two NCAA DII-III Universities, tour 1 complete campus, part of another and visit 3 university hockey facilities plus play 2 games plus watch a DI NCAA Men's game. ALL IN ALL A GREAT WEEKEND!
The Caps first stop was in Eau Claire Wisconsin where on Friday Oct. 19 they had a Campus tour provided by student hockey players of the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire BluGolds. The Eau Claire Campus is very beautiful and is home to approx. 10,000 students. Prior to playing the BluGolds in the evening the Caps saw several Campus faculty buildings, the student centre, student dorms, the athletic and training facilities as well as the student centre plus a small tour of the community itself. In the evening Coach Mike Collins of the BluGolds toured the team's hockey facilities prior to playing to a 1-1 tie. (see report below).
The Caps traveled to Superior Wisconsin on Saturday Oct. 20 to play the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. Prior to the game former Yellowjacket and Caps Assistant Coach Shaye Nelissen gave the Caps a small tour of the Wellness Centre on Campus plus pointed out some other items about the Campus including which dorms she stayed in :). The UWS Campus which is home to 3,000 students is first class with the Marcovich Wellness Center a 115,000-square-foot building built in 2003 housing the field house with indoor track capable of hosting NCAA meets. Also includes fitness room, weight room, racquetball courts, climbing wall, classrooms and offices. The competition floor can handle an indoor track meet or be configured for multiple volleyball or basketball courts, or an indoor soccer field. This area also is available for team conditioning and practices during inclement weather. The center includes the renovated Gates Physical Education Building with gymnasium for Yellowjacket basketball and volleyball teams as well as a swimming pool, dance studio, classrooms, computer lab, and state-of-the-art exercise physiology lab.
The Caps then toured the Wessman Arena which is the Yellowjackets own Arena on Campus including the team Locker Room. They then played the Yellowjackets (See game report Below) before travelling to Bemidji MN. to watch a DI Men's game featuring the Host Bemidji State Beavers vs. the Lake Superior State Lakers. Following the game a Player from the Women's team (Stephanie) and a staff from the new Sanford Centre (Dave) where they were also provided with a tour team facilities including Women's team lounge, Locker Room, Trainer facilities, Training facilities and equipment along with BSU historical pictures located in various locations throughout the centre.
CAPS LOSE 3-0 to YELLOWJACKETS
The Caps played hard firing 22 shots at the University of Wisconsin Yellowjackets net but found out that was not enough against the older, faster and stronger Yellowjacket team that was ranked in the Top 10 in DII-III NCAA hockey last season. The Caps received solid goaltending for the 2nd game in a row as Elisha Oswald stopped 43 of 46 shots fired her way and kept the Caps in the game as the period scores were 0-0 and only 1-0 going into the 3rd period.
The Caps again had a chance to tour some of the UWS facilities and see what university athletics are all about.
The team travelled onto to Bemidji MN where they attended a NCAA DI Male hockey game between the hosts Bemidji State Beavers and Lake Superior State Lakers at the new Sanford Centre. The facility is first class and the Caps were provided with a tour of the Female Locker Room and the entire facility - GREAT EXPERIENCE for the Caps - watch for pics this week!
CAPS TIE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - EAU CLAIRE BLUGOLDS
The Caps traveled to Eau Claire Wisconsin to play an exhibition game vs. the UWEA BluGolds on Friday Oct. 19 and came away with a very positive 1-1 result. The Caps and the BluGolds, who were playing their first game of the season, battled back and forth throughout the contest which saw the host team out shoot the Caps 34-32. Robin Thiessen was solid in the Caps net and was just over 3 minutes from picking up a win however a turnover in their own end by the Caps led to the BluGolds equalizing and the teams settling for the draw.
The Caps opened the scoring in the 2nd period when Kantara Robertson deflected a strong point shot from Megain Tully who had been fed the puck by Sheridan Oswald.
All in all the Caps battled hard all night long against the older more experienced and physically stronger BluGolds.
The Caps would like to thank the BluGold Team for providing them with a tour of the beautiful campus of UW-Eau Claire earlier in the day.
