Minnesota Thoroughbred Tournament Updates

CAPS FINISH 4th in 16 TEAM THOROUGHBREDS TOURNAMENT

The Caps lost their Semifinal to MFMHL rival Westman Wildcats in a shootout before dropping a 5 to 0 decision to POE of Kelowna BC. The Caps and the Wildcats battled through 3 periods and a 5 minute OT and solved nothing. Madison Dreger scored the Caps lone goal in the 3rd period as the Caps battled back from a 1 to 0 deficit and forced OT.

The Caps controlled a large part of the game outshooting Westman 16 to 8 over the final 2 periods but were unable to get more than one goal. Robin Thiessen was solid in net for the Caps allowing just 1 goal on 17 shots. In the Shootout the first 2 shooters for Westman scored and the Caps could not solve the Wildcats goaltender leading to a 2 to 1 shootout loss.

The Caps then went back on the ice to face the POE team less than 2 hours later and came out flat giving up 3 in the 1st period before settling in and playing a solid 2nd and 3rd period against one of the Top Sports Schools in Canada.

The Caps Top 4 finish was their highest ever in this elite U19 - 16 team event with 3 of the 4 teams coming from Manitoba and 2 from the MFMHL in the Top 4.

Game 3 vs Minnesota Thoroughbreds - The Caps picked up their 3rd 2 to 1 victory of the weekend as Taylor Boehlig and Chantal Gamache each scored. The Caps again received solid goaltending from Elisha Oswald as she made several keys saves to pick up the win. The Caps again outshot their opponents and went into the 3rd period with another 2 to 0 lead however gave up a goal early on a turnover and then battled with the older and very aggressive host team to pick up the victory. The Caps now finish top 4 and will play a semi-final game at 7:30 am on Sunday vs. a team to be determined.


Game 2 vs St. Mary's Flames - Sheridan Oswald and Chantal Gamache provided the offense with a goal each and Robin Thiessen stopped 16 of 17 shots as the Caps moved to 2-0 with a head fought 2-1 win over the St. Mary's Flames in the Minnesota Thoroughbreds Tournament.

The Caps outshot St. Mary's 19-17 in a game that had high intensity from the drop of the puck. The went into the 3rd period with a 2-0 lead however with just over 6 minutes to play St. Mary's scored on a break away to set up a furious finish that saw the Flames pull their goalie.

The Caps now play the Host Thoroughbreds at 1:30 and a win could ensure a spot in the Championship round.


Game 1 vs Keweenaw Michigan Storm - Megan Tully had a goal and an assist while Courtlyn Oswald scored the 2nd Capitals goal in a 2-1 opening game win vs. the Storm at the 2012 Thoroughbreds Tournament. Picking up assists for the Caps were Chantal Gamache, Hannah Dalrymple and Madison Dreger. Elisha Oswald picked up the win in net stoppoing 16 of 17 shots as the Caps outgunned the Storm 27-17.

The Caps now play St. Mary's Flames on Saturday @ 8:00 am and the host Thoroughbreds @ 3:00
