Esso Cup SUMMARY

Game 7 - Esso Cup Bronze Medal - Although the Caps outshot the Saskatoon Stars 32-16 they ended up on the wrong end of a 5-1 decision and lost the Bronze Medal game at the National Championship. The Caps fell behind 2-0 after the first period after being outshot 9-6 however from there the Caps would outshoot the Stars 26-9 but just could not get the bounces they needed. The Caps would make it 2-1 when Sheridan Oswald beat the Stars netminder with a perfect one timer but a very questionable penalty call led to another Stars power play goal and shortly after that they would make it 4-1 when an unlucky bounce led to a quality chance for the Stars. The Caps never quit and continued to play solid hockey throughout the second and third periods controlling a great deal of the play but solid goaltending just did not allow them to capitalize. The Player of the Game for the Caps was Chelsea Hallson.

The Caps finish the season with 41-17-3-3 record, the MFMHL Championship and a Top 4 finish at the Hockey Canada Esso Cup National Cahmpionship. The Coaching staff is extremely proud of the compete and class level displayed by the team as they battled right to the last whistle while playing hard but clean hockey. AWESOME!

Game 6 - Esso Cup Semi-final - The Caps had a chance to move into the National Championship final with a win over the Sudbury Wolves however it was not to be. The Wolves scored 2 second period power play goals and an empty net goal to seal a 3-0 win. The loss means the Capitals now play for Bronze at Noon Red Deer time vs. Saskatoon. The Caps outshot the Wolves 23-20 however it was the chances they missed that hurt them along with a strong defensive effort from the Wolves. The Player of the Game for the Caps was Sheridan Oswald.

Earlier in the day at the Awards Breakfast Tamara McVannel was named the Top Defense at the Esso Cup National Championhip.

Game 5 - The Caps are off to the Semi-finals at the 2015 Hockey Canada Esso Cup National Midget Championships although they lost their last game of the Round Robin to the host Red Deer Chiefs 3-2 in a shootout. The Caps found out earlier in the day that the Edmonton Thunder had lost to Sudbury automatically pushing the Caps through. The Caps got goals from Emily Upgang and Tamara McVannel but were unable to seal the win although again outshooting their opposition for the 5th straight game. Kathleen Kosior made 17 saves to take the tough loss. Emily Upgang was the Caps Player of the Game.

The Caps now play Sudbury Wolves in the Semi-finals on Friday April 24th @ 3:30 Alberta Time.

Game 4 - The Caps picked up a huge 4-1 win over previously undefeated Ontario behind the 4 point performance of Mekaela Fisher who scored two goals and added 2 helpers. Sheridan Oswald had a goal and 2 assists while Emily Upgang picked up a goal and an assist to lead the offense. Lauren Taraschuk stopped 20 of 21 shots in net to record the win. The Caps played a tremendous team game in earning a valuable 3 points in an effort to make the playoff round. Player of the Game for the Caps was Mekaela Fisher.

Game 3 - The Caps earned their first ever win at the Esso Cup National Championship with a convincing 6-1 decision over a determined Moncton Rockets. Behind the two goal performances of Sheridan Oswald and Emily Upgang and 20 save performance of Lauren Taraschuk the Caps defeated a hard working Rockets team. The Caps got single markers from Haley Proteau and Sydney Taylor with Mekaela Fisher and Tamara McVannel adding two assists each while Oswald also added two helpers and single assists went to Upgang, Leandra Timmerman, Sarah Thomson and Chelsea Hallson. The Player of the Game for the Caps was Sheridan Oswald. The Caps outshot the Rockets 43-22.

Game 2 - The Caps lost another heart breaker where they again out chanced their opposition the Saskatoon Stars and went into the 3rd period with a 2-1 lead. This would not hold up as for the first time in 2 months when leading heading into the 3rd period the Caps would end up on the wrong side of a 3-2 score. The Caps got goals from Chelsea Hallson and Tamara McVannel to open a 2-0 lead half through the game only to see Saskatoon score once in the 2nd period and twice in the 3rd to take the win. The Caps had numerous chances to get their third goal of the game prior to and after giving up the lead including with the goalie pulled but could not find the back of the net. Final shots on net were 27-19 for the Caps. Player of the Game for the Caps was Tamara McVannel.

Game 1 - Capitals loss 1-0 to Edmonton in a shoot out. Although the Caps outplayed and outshot the Edmonton Thunder 42-26 they could not find a goal in 3 regulation periods and OT before getting out scored 2-1 in the shoot out and lsoing the game 1-0. The Caps were pleased with their effort in picking up a point in their first game ever at the National Championship vs. a team that has medaled at 5 Esso Cups. Player of the Game for Central Plains was goaltender Lauren Taraschuk who registered a shut stopping 26 shots.
