CAPS PICK UP 2 WINS AT HOCKEY MANITOBA PROJECT 100

The Caps traveled to the MTS IcePlex on Saturday December 13th where they were scheduled to play two tough games vs. the Thunderbay Queens and the St. Mary's Academy Prep Flames. In their first match of the day the Caps faced off against the Thunderbay Queens an organization that has won Gold and Silver Medals at the Esso Cup National Championships. The Caps knew they they have to come out quickly and use their speed against the bigger Queens and did just that outshooting the Queens 16-2 in the first period and building a 2-0 lead on goals from Sheridan Oswald and Emily Upgang. The Caps continued to control the tempo of the game and finally scored their 3rd goal of the game when Oswald came up the wing and let a slap shot go that rung off the far post and in. The third period say the Queens push back to make the score 3-1 before Tamara McVannel would score on the power play to seal the 4-1 win for the Caps. Lauren Taraschuk picked up the win in net for the Caps.

In their second game of the day the Caps faced a tougher challenge playing the St. Mary's Flames and in a back and forth contest the Caps would prevail 4-3. The Caps would take the early lead with Stephanie Stinson's first period marker and Kelly-Rae Zdan's first of two goals providing a 2-0 lead early in the second period. The Flames however would reply with the next two goals in the second period sending the teams to the 2nd intermission all even. The Caps would fall behind for the first time all weekend when the Flames scored 3 minutes into the third period to take a 3-2 lead. The Caps did not let this get them down and responded to tie the game on Zdan's second goal before Sydney Taylor scored her first goal of the season from the point to give the Caps a 4-3 lead which would hold up as the eventual game winner.

The Caps coaches were pleased with the effort put forth throughout the day against two very tough opponents and the Caps now play Monday December 15 at the Keith Bodley Centre in Winnipeg vs. the Avros in MFMHL play. Game Time is 7:15 p.m.
